Theme
A huge theme in Counting By 7s is overcoming grief. Willow was in deep grief after her adoptive parents passed away in a car accident. She overcomes that by finding happiness in nature, and we can take that as a lesson for life because we can know that there is always happiness.
Helping one another is a lesson we can learn from this story because Willow received so much help, and that helped her get through her hard times, and persevere, because she eventually reached happiness. We can help one another each an every day, and one act of assistance or support can help dramatically, just like it helps Willow.
A final theme that can be taken from this is if you're lost, you might need to swim against the tide. This can inspire us to believe in ourself, even if we are different from everyone else. Willow has trouble making friends because of her different personality in the story, but she kept going, and eventually found some friends and connections. "There are 7 people who matter in your world. For me I count:
1. My mom
2. My dad
3. Mai
4. Dell
5. Quang-ha
6. Pattie
7. Jairo
I see each of those people like the colors of the rainbow. They are vivid and distinct. And they hold a permanent place in my heart."
